It's tough times and everyone is looking to cut costs any way that they can. For many service based businesses with a recurring expense this can be a fantastic time to increase your customer base and create a loyal fan club. A business who really wants to serve the community can offer a savings and good service to gain clients who wouldn't have considered switching even 8 months ago. This opportunity has also created a fantastic market for fast-talking swindlers who share half-truths to earn your business. One of the least understood expenses that a small business incurs is Visa and Mastercard processing fees. It is difficult to understand because the industry has been shrouded in secrecy and dishonesty for so long. Did you know:
- There have been multiple class action lawsuits against Independent Sales Offices in the US in the last 10 years for dishonest sales practices and price gouging?
- That the Visa / Mastercard interchange charts (a detail of costs from the card associations) were not a matter of public record until just a few years ago? As a result, you as a small business could never know if you were getting a good deal or not!
- Leasing a credit card terminal will cost you 3 to 4 TIMES what you would pay for it in cash
- That MOST sales contractors for Independent Visa / Mastercard sales offices only quote there BEST rate-- and when you sign on the dotted line you will be taken to the cleaners on your first bill!

Mike Cantrell, president of the Kechi Chamber of Commerce, stands at the corner of 61st North and Oliver. Cantrell, who helped revive the chamber, has big plans for Kechi, including the establishment of an economic development district at the intersection.
Small town dreams big By Chris Hunter Last Updated: January 29, 2009
Kechi’s new chamber of commerce maps out plan to attract more businesses
The commercial district of what used to be the “Antique Capital of the World” sits mostly barren. Old antique shops and former restaurants welcome visitors with “For Sale” signs and boarded up windows, and now the town’s only gas station sits empty. No cigarettes, no food, no fuel.
This is Kechi.
Besides Geno’s Barbeque, Bierock, Kechi Dollar, Kechi Auto Mall, Kechi Wine and Spirits and a handful of art concerns, not many other businesses remain.
For Kechi, the glass seems half empty. But don’t tell that to Mike Cantrell, president of the newly revived Kechi Chamber of Commerce. Cantrell sees hope and he’s decided to take matters into his own hands to attract new businesses, even in tough economic times.
Cantrell, owner of Thrive Solutions, helped re-form the Chamber of Commerce after the group had disbanded for a few years and is now leading the fight to bring new things to Kechi.

2- Poor training increases attrition. What are the reasons? When we pump people into the sales, service or production environments for our company without the adaquate information and training to do the job required of them it leaves or work-force ill-prepared to accomplish what we expect of them. What happens next? The crazy cycle!

Its been interesting walking down the road of growth. It seems like every turn that I take opens up a new set of paths that one has to explore. Too bad there isn't a simple map that a business owner could set down with a cup of Joe and just follow the landmarks to success the first time. By the way, if anyone has that map, I want it!
